Right-hander Nick Pivetta will make his spring debut with the Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon as Boston takes on the Twins at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers.

Pivetta, who was 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in two starts at the end of last season, is the favorite to clinch Boston’s vacant fifth spot in the rotation. He is expected to play two innings against the Twins.

Kiké Hernandez, JD Martinez, Rafael Devers and Christian Vazquez are among the regulars of the Boston training. Designated hitter Nelson Cruz is the headliner for Minnesota.

Red Sox top prospect Bryan Mata was supposed to provide relief to Pivetta but was scratched due to the pain in his triceps, according to manager Alex Cora. Right-hander Eduard Bazardo will be the first reliever to come out of the relieving pen for Boston.

The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 pm Wednesday’s clash is the second of eight clashes between the Red Sox and the Twins in the Grapefruit League game.
