(NEW YORK) – The deadly fire that ravaged a New York City apartment building in the Bronx neighborhood of Tremont has left many residents homeless, displaced or in need of essentials they lost in tragedy.

The blaze has killed at least 17 people, including eight children, and injured more than 60 others, according to New York firefighters.

The community quickly got to work meeting the demand of those in need by raising funds and accumulating donations for the cause.

Here are some ways to support the efforts:

Local elected officials collect donations for affected families.

Priority items, New York City Council member Mark Levine, are gift cards, new and unworn clothing and outerwear, diapers, baby items, packaged food, bottled water. , hygiene products and toiletries.

Donations can be made to any of these locations in the Bronx:

-Monroe College Ustin Hall at 2375 Jerome Avenue. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

– Office of Senator Gustavo Rivera at 2432 Grand Concourse, Suite 506. Monday to Thursday, 11 am to 6 pm

-Office of Assembly member Yudelka Tapia at 2175C avenue Jerome. Monday and Wednesday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

-Office of Councilor Oswald Feliz 573 East Fordham Road. Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mayor Eric Adams and New York City fundraise for those affected by the tragedy on the New York government website.

“Your cash donation will allow the distribution of emergency relief supplies and provide support to the victims and their families,” the website says. “All of your donation will go to help those affected by the fire. “

Basic necessities are also collected by community leaders at the Bronx office of the New York Department of Education.

The Bronx Community Foundation, a local philanthropic operation that focuses on building an economic and social justice community in the borough, said it is joining efforts to serve those affected and accepts donations.

“Our hearts and prayers are with our neighbors, families and friends affected by today’s devastating fire in the Bronx,” the organization shared in a tweet. “As the residents’ needs are shared with the Bronx Community Foundation, we will support them wherever we can. “
