Add another quarterback to the arsenal for Ryan Day.
Since Urban Meyer announced his retirement from Ohio State in December 2018, Day has landed five of the top 50 quarterback prospects, the last being the No. 1 prospect of 2024 in the Top247. , Dylan Raiola of Chandler, Arizona. Railoa pulled the trigger Monday night.
“I think what he does with quarterbacks is special,” Railoa told 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong.
Since signing CJ Stroud during the first signing period in December 2019, Day announced the announcement of four five-star quarterbacks for the Buckeyes – Stroud (who was in the 2020 class with four-star Jack Miller) , 2021 signer Kyle McCord , Quinn Ewers, signed up in early 2021 and now Raiola.
Sure, Ewers left for Texas, but when he committed to Ohio State to be part of the 2022 class and then reclassified in 2021, it gave the Buckeyes two five-star quarterbacks in this classroom.
In 2022, Ohio State lured Devin Brown. Although not a five-star, Brown wasn’t far off, ranking as the No. 43 player and No. 6 quarterback according to the 247Sports Composite.
For now, the quarterback’s depth chart is stacked. Stroud is a fashionable pick for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft and is an early favorite for the Heisman Trophy.
Behind him is McCord, who ranked No. 28 overall for the 2021 class.
Then there’s Brown, who signed up in January.
And now Railoa, who has claimed his claim to be Ohio State’s starting quarterback in the mid-to-late 2020s.
“Pair Raiola’s dynamic NFL arm with the ability to play effective football and you have the makings of an elite-level QB prospect with the ability to make an immediate impact at the next level,” writes Cooper Petagna of 247Sports.
Interestingly enough, Ohio State is yet to land a quarterback in the Class of 2023. The Buckeyes are on a few elite targets, including Dylan Lonergan, Dante Moore and Eli Holstein, but it could also be a year they take someone out of high school or transfer ranks for depth purposes. With Brown signing in 2022 and now Raiola in 2024, it’s going to be tough to lure a top passer in this class.
Never mind Day – he loses Justin Fields and replaces him with Stroud. He will lose Stroud after this year and replace him McCord or Brown. So Raiola will be waiting in the wings. Wash, rinse, repeat.
