I’m a sucker for a Ben & Jerry’s “limited botch”. The flavors tend to be unique and experimental and often delicious. When I saw this limited flavor inspired by the Netflix show “Nailed It!” I was curious to see what they were going to come up with.

For those unfamiliar with the Netflix cooking show, it essentially pits amateur bakers against each other to recreate elaborate sweets to the best of their limited abilities. The results are often disastrous, but always delicious.

In fact, I was surprised to see that Ben & Jerry’s nod to the show only contained three main ingredients. “Chip Happens” (the names of flavors never disappoint) is chocolate ice cream with chunks of chocolate fudge and a swirl of chips. To really capture the essence of the show, I might have liked rainbow glitter or gelatin teddy bears or edible sprinkles, just something a little more showy.

This is a fairly straightforward salty / sweet flavor combo and it works well. Chocolate ice cream is Ben & Jerry’s usual creamy and sweet offering. The fudge chips are plentiful and made with really good fudge chocolate.

The winner here is a thick swirl of potato chips that somehow manages to stay crisp. I don’t know how they did it, but the chips are not mushy at all. The swirl runs throughout the pint and it’s still crisp. Besides the excellent texture, the chips also add a nice salty flavor to the treat which balances out the overly sweet chocolate.

I really like this combo and the only reason it gets four and not five scoops from me is that I find it a bit boring compared to the elaborate desserts on the show.

As usual, Ben & Jerry’s is meant to be consumed sparingly as it contains 390 calories per 2/3 cup serving. There are 24 grams of fat, 170 milligrams of sodium, and 31 grams of sugar, so enjoy it in moderation.
